1. Typesetting Indic scripts

6.1.1. Can TeX typeset indian languages?

There are a number of ``solutions'' that use TeX to typeset pages using indian scripts. These schemes are not based on character encodings, but use (phonetic) transliteration or visual ordering of the input.

TeX packages for Indian language typesetting

  • The Indian Tex Users Group has made available packages that support a few Indic scripts.

  • ITRANS is a transliteration package that works with TeX to produce printed output for a few indic scripts.

6.1.2. Is there a TeX like typesetter that works with Unicode?

Not yet. However, the Omega project is attempting to create a new version of TeX that can process Unicode encoded text.
