Malayalam is spoken by approximately ??? million people worldwide. The major concentration of Malayalam speakers is in the Southern Indian state of Kerala.

Malayalam is written in two distinct scripts or lipis. The ``old'' lipi uses over 900 unique graphemes. The ``new'' lipi is a simplification of the old lipi and comprises about 175 unique graphemes.
