Building Websites using make

Nik Clayton's article series on Daemon News is an excellent introduction to the unix way of managing websites. These articles are available online.

DocBook

DocBook is a popular SGML document type definition that is used to write computer documentation.

More information about DocBook can be found from the docbook.org web site.

DSSSL

DSSSL stands for Document Style and Semantics Specification Language. DSSSL offers a portable way to specify the transformation of an SGML document into other formats.

FreeBSD Documentation Project

The FreeBSD Documentation Project uses SGML and DocBook to manage their documentation.

Our documentation system shares a number of architectural features in common with their effort. In particular, the FreeBSD Documentation Project Primer for New Contributors is recommended reading.

jade

Jade is an implementation of the DSSSL style language developed by James Clark. Information about this tool can be found from its home page.

openjade is a project undertaken by the DSSSL community to maintain and extend jade.

PDF, Postscript

PostScript™ and PDF are page description languages created by Adobe Inc..

PostScript and PDF Specifications

The ISO/IEC DIS 10180 [1995] standard ``Standard Page Description Language'' defines a page description language that is, in effect, an internationalized version of PostScript™.

SGML

SGML stands for Standard Generalized Markup Language, a language for defining structured markup. SGML is an international standard, [ISO 8879:1986].

SourceForge

SourceForge is a collaborative development system hosting a (very large) number of open source projects. More information about this innovative way of doing software development can be found at their main site, ``http://sourceforge.net/ ''.

Unix program development

There are a number of books catering to readers new to Unix. The following books are recommended reading:

XML

XML stands for Extensible Markup Language. XML is a standard from the World Wide Web Consortium.

Robin Cover's pages on XML are an excellent starting point for finding out more about XML.

Another good resource is the web site XML.com.
