II. Standards

In this part of the Handbook we discuss existing standards on information processing in Indian languages. These chapters are not meant to duplicate information from the standards themselves; instead we examine these standards from the point of view of a software implementor

The rest of this part is organized as follow:

  • Chapter 4 is a general introduction to the available standards for Indian language processing.

  • Chapter 5 examines the IS13194 character set standard, popularly known as ISCII.

  • Chapter 6 examines a companion standard to ISCII that covers font encodings.

  • Chapter 7 examines a standard for Indian language pagers.

  • Chapter 8 examines a character set definition for the southern Indian language of Kannada.

  • Chapter 9 examines a character set definition for the southern Indian language of Tamil.

  • Chapter 10 examines the Unicode character set standard and the looks at the issues involved in implementing indian language support based on Unicode.
