Font Annotator

The Handbook build process, the Translib library and the Translation Manager tool rely on a simple annotation scheme in order to use arbitrary TTF, Type1 and other kinds of fonts for Indian script rendering on platforms that lack support for ``native'' indian language rendering.

The process of annotating a given font is currently manual and quite time-consuming. This tool provides a GUI front-end that can help automate many of the manual tasks.

Rationale

Given a font with an arbitrary internal encoding scheme, the tool will help the user name and classify the individual glyphs into glyph ``classes'' (e.g. consonants, vowels, vowel marks etc). Given these classes and certain built-in (script-specific) heuristics, the tool will generate all the possible combinations of glyphs (graphemes) and present to the user for review. The tool will allow the user to correct the position of the individual components of a complex grapheme in order to correct errors in the font.

The font annotator tool is to be implemented using Python and Tkinter (Python's GUI toolkit) to maximise its cross-platform portability. The specifics of font handling will be delegated to the FreeType library.

Background Information

The Translib library's design document is a good starting point for the required information.
