As analyzed in the Design Axes article, we need intuitive and easy-to-use ways of interacting with computing devices in Indian languages. Existing keyboard based solutions are cumbersome and difficult to use.
Pen based input methods that rely on handwriting recognition offer a direct way for users to input data in Indian languages without needing to learn complex keyboard layouts and arcane editing sequences. In these input methods the user directly writes onto a touch enabled pad with a pen-like device. The system then analyses the motion of the pen and detects the script letter that the user intended to write.
A number of open-source programs support handwriting recognition today, but most of these remain mostly experimental. Commercial PDA offerings have more robust handwriting recognition support, but the workings of these programs are not open for us to study and develop for.

Perhaps one of the most critical pieces of software that one could develop. Rather than focussing on a few Indic scripts, we should look at creating a language or notation to describe allowed letter shapes of the language. From this notation, we should then ``compile'' individual recognizers for the script.
