DocBook/SGML to PDF transformation with Indic script support

The text of the Indic-Computing Handbook uses DocBook/SGML for markup. The marked up text gets processed by the documentation toolchain into various presentation forms. The toolchain needs to be augmented to handle Indian language scripts when generating printable output in PDF format.

Rationale

The documentation toolchain uses Jade and TeX to generate print output. The frontend of the documentation toolchain has been designed to work with fonts with arbitrary encodings. The print side backend of the toolchain needs to be augmented to handle these correctly.

Background Information

Information about OpenJade, the DSSSL transformation engine used can be found at the OpenJade project page on SourceForge.Net. TeX wizardry help can be obtained from the TUGIndia website.

Skill Set Required

TeX and PDF expertise. Familiarity with DSSSL and SGML. Unix development skills.

Other Resource Requirements

A fast development machine --- Jade and OpenJade are quite slow. Access to a library stocked with books on TeX would be help.

Time Estimate

3 months of effort.

Comments

The document toolchain could possibly be reengineered to use Omega, the 16-bit capable revision of TeX. Doing this would require even more TeXnical wizardry than the above sub-project.
