Chapter 2 The Indic-Computing Project

Questions about the Indic-Computing Project.

2.1. What is the relationship between the Indic-Computing project and others like IndLinux, Linux Localization Initiative and KIndic?
2.2. What made you choose ``Indic-Computing'' as the project's name?
2.3. We can search and find stuff on the Web. Why do we need the Handbook?
2.4. Why are certain sections of the Handbook empty?

2.1. What is the relationship between the Indic-Computing project and others like IndLinux, Linux Localization Initiative and KIndic?

Our aim is to provide accurate and authentic information on Indian language issues to developers, assisting these projects and others like them in creating accurate and interoperable implementations.

We are also interested in seeing that the work of such projects gets to the end-user in an easy to use form. To this end, we intend to create and maintain a delivery vehicle in the form a bootable OS image which has Indian language support built in.

2.2. What made you choose ``Indic-Computing'' as the project's name?

SourceForge.Net has a 16 character limit on the unix names of projects hosted by them. ``indian-language-computing'' was descriptive but was clearly too long. ``indic-computing'' on the other hand was a good fit and was available. Note that as our work is not OS specific, names like ``indian-linux'' or ``indic-bsd'' are not appropriate.

2.3. We can search and find stuff on the Web. Why do we need the Handbook?

Information about Indian languages is increasing on the Web. However, finding quality information about Indian languages is still not easy.

The Handbook scores over a bunch of bookmarked links in the following ways:

  • It contains authentic information; you don't believe everything you read on the Web, do you?

  • It is meant to be comprehensive so that the information you want is available from one source and not dependent on whether a server halfway across the world is reachable.

2.4. Why are certain sections of the Handbook empty?

Mostly because nobody has stepped forward with text to fill them.

They will get filled by and by, as our volunteers get around to them. This could be anytime between next week to ten years from now. If you would like see something happen faster, please contribute.
